Interview GOHZER (Australia)

1. Hello. What kind of reasons that might inspire/influence you to form this side project?

I’ve always loved ambient music, there is so much emotion and minimalism to it, it provokes much imagination and soul. Soundtracks, ambient pieces of black metal albums, and deep web drone and dungeon synth, I love them all. They make great pieces to read to.

2. The look of the band (the frontcovers, the music, the song titles) feels dramatic. How do you want to profile yourself?

Gohzer is ambience of the dark, solitude and loneliness, the way to bring those emotion in a visual and audio form was the minimalism, building to chaos sometimes. The black and white, the emptiness of it and in the names of the tracks themselves. They often tell stories and sometimes are only an emotion, captured during the recording.

3. What are the most challenging aspects when writing a song and how do you go about the approach?

Writers block would be the hardest to overcome, yet most of the time it is the overwhelming scene of emotion and failing to find the right notes and sounds to portray them.

4. What do you attempt to capture, express or communicate through your music? What is the goal of your art?

The goal is expression, release. The loneliness, the emptiness, the music I find like it speaks with me, comforts me in a way, so I aim to do the same with mine.

5. Your music is mostly recorded in days of solitude with limited resources Tell me a bit more about the ambiance, the mood, the recording conditions, of your tracks.

I can go from recording with midi files, to my keyboard. From slowing my guitars down, using pedals, random sounds and techniques to recording sounds on my phone. I love to use an old piano and sometimes a mandolin, and often the recordings themselves are raw, messy, even low quality, but that adds to the atmosphere I believe. As mentioned, usually in days of isolation I record, I can record albums at a time to single tracks in a day if the emotions and ideas are in the right place.

6. Do you find anything valuable in human society? What about individual humans?

I am someone who feels constant unease around other people, at times I find myself very isolated in mind from people, I do not understand humans and I do not belong to this world and I despise what mankind has done to it. Has a whole, people annoy me, anger me and terrify me. But individuals aside, there are some beautiful and amazing souls out there, and sometimes they keep the pain of life bearable. Yet as mentioned, I do love my solitude and time away from humans, it is my time to create and breathe with no outside interference.

7. Let’s conclude this interview with you telling your future plans with Gohzer.

So far this year I have released three EPs (One album length) and have more plans later on. I am taking a break from a lot of music for a few months to focus on other creative things and write the foundations of the next Zkarv album but later on in the year there will be another series of EPs from Gohzer, so far it seems they will follow the story of a pagan coven, yet with underlying themes of longing and not belonging.
