And I inist: How important the first impression is. Even though I am not too much into the subgenre Finnish Dead Shape Figure play, they got me from moment one because of the right choice for this EP opener. The Phantom Deceit is the first track this four-track production presents, the one that is compact from second one, letting you know this is a Melodic Death Metal band with many Thrashy influences. Catchy, technical, well played and, why not, somehow aggressive, this is an invitation to keep listening to the rest of the release. There is a constant in this EP, and this is well played music, with a good mix and a pretty clear idea of what they want to express. These guys have been compared to early Soilwork and The Haunted, and, indeed, I can find certain similarities in the execution. As I said at the beginning of this review, this genre is not necessarily my cup of tea, but I must admit that Refinement of Hatred is not a bad production, so, if you like Melodic Death Metal, give it a try.
